Although there had long been an international high fashion scene, globally centered around Paris Fashion Week, three notable Japanese designers crashed into this scene around the 1970's, making quite a stir with their avant-garde take on high fashion and clothing structure. They not only changed international understandings of high fashion, but became permanent icons in Japan as the creators of a uniquely Japanese take on high fashion.
Please read my visual essay for more information on the relationship of these artists to the international high fashion scene and to learn more about their international reception as a group. The purpose of this online exhibition is to getting a fuller picture of the designers as artists within the context of a genre, so please peruse their pages at your desire.
