Ydk Morimoe is a multi-media surrealist portrait artist currently based in Tokyo. Born in 1985, he focuses on the disillusionment of youth, particularly focusing on young men.
Morimoe's art features a very deep divide in its juxtaposition: the bright colors and exciting, abstract forms punctuate a very pessimistic, deeply sad undertone. The faded confetti colors resemble (or mask actual) wounds on the teenagers bodies. The subjects look sad, overwhelmed, and attacked by their environments. The colorful, abstract elements of design evoke elements of psychadelic drugs.
Morimoe's use of surrealism forces the viewer to look twice and reconsider the young subjects of his paintings. The bright, exciting colors draw the viewer in, marveling at the intricacy and detail of the designs. But the human subject's distress and pain is unavoidable, as the subject tries to both hide in enjoy the melanchony carnival that's falling apart around them.
