John L. Sullivan vs. James "Gentleman Jim" Corbett Fight Ticket

Dublin Core

Title

John L. Sullivan vs. James "Gentleman Jim" Corbett Fight Ticket

Description

The ticket allowing admittance to the match between recognized champion John L. Sullivan and Jim Corbett, which would mark the end of both bareknuckle fighting as a major sport as Queensbury rules grew in popularity as well as the career of Sullivan, who dominated the scene for a decade. The event was held at the upper-class Olympic Club, explaining its high price of admittance ($15 equating to well over $350 today according to the CPI calculator). This price along with the reverse explaining the club's right to revoke access to anyone who purchased their seat goes to support the feeling of exclusivity these clubs tried to propogate. - Bradford Gladstone
