Title A name given to the resource Nikkorai Enbo (Distant View of Nikolai Cathedral) Description An account of the resource Shin Tokyo Hyakkei Nikolai Cathedral is the popular name for the headquarters of the Japanese Orthodox Church, constructed in 1891 in the Kanda district. The dome was badly damaged in the earthquake but was rebuilt by 1929. The cathedral was one of the meisho of the modern city. Today it is obscured by high-rise buildings. In a somewhat imaginative composition, Fukazawa depicts it from the east, along with the new concrete bridges over the Kanda River. The train in the foreground is on the Yamanote Line, the loop line around the city, which became fully operational in 1925. The park, which remains today, was laid out symmetrically and constructed in multiple levels joined by stairways in an art deco style. Its most notable features were a cascading fountain and a pergola, visible along the right edge. Title A name given to the resource Jingu Kyujyo Soukeisen (Baseball Match Between Waseda and Keio at Jingu Baseball Stadium) Description An account of the resource Shin Tokyo Hyakkei The baseball rivalry between Waseda and Keio Universities is the oldest in Japan. The first game between the two schools was played in 1903, but after only three meetings, the series was canceled because of violent behavior between the schools’ supporters. The game was revived in 1925, to be played in series among the major universities in Tokyo. Jingū Stadium was constructed in 1926 in the outer precinct of Meiji Shrine. Because the stadium could not meet demand for seating for the Waseda/Keio game, it was renovated in 1931 to hold 58,000 people. Fukazawa commemorates the first meeting of the two schools in the new stadium.
