According to a prophecy, the Greeks could not take Troy without Achilles, but he was doomed to die in that war. Achilles' mother Thetis therefore sent him to the island of Skyros, where he lived disguised as a maiden with the daughters of King Lycomedes. Odysseus was sent to retrieve Achilles for the Greek cause. Disguised as a trader, he laid out feminine jewelry and ornaments along with masculine weapons, then arranged for a military alarm to be sounded. Benbridge has shown the moment when Achilles, still wearing a woman's clothing, hears the alarm and claps a helmet on his head, thus revealing his true identity. The story appears in many versions; the most detailed is by the Roman poet Statius in his Achilleid. It is the subject of paintings by Poussin and others.

"During his first term as President, in March 1803, Thomas Jefferson appointed Benjamin Latrobe Surveyor of Public Buildings. It may have been in recognition of this honor that Latrobe's good friend Charles Willson Peale painted this portrait for his Philadelphia gallery of distinguished persons. . . . ". . . The Latrobe portrait is not listed in [the artist's] museum Accession Book, begun about [1804], so it was probably painted later that year or early in 1805. . . . ". . . The artist boldly blocked in the ear, and he deftly brushed in the curly hair, sometimes dragging a nearly dry brush in short arcs. The silver-rimmed spectacles pushed back into the hair are incompletely indicated, almost improvised. "The face is handsome, but the artist is concerned first with character and mind. John Lewis Krimmel emigrated from his native Germany to Philadelphia in 1810. At first he supported himself by painting portraits and teaching drawing but soon began to paint images of Philadelphia life; he may, in fact, be the earliest American artist to specialize in genre scenes. Krimmel was actively involved with the then-new Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts until his death by drowning in the Schuylkill River. "Fourth of July in Centre Square" depicts a broad range of the city's population, including fashionable ladies and gentlemen, plainly dressed Quakers, and African-American citizens. Latrobe's Philadelphia Water Works, shown at left, was considered a marvel of engineering as well as an icon of neo-classical design for the growing city. The clean water provided by its steam-driven pumping station also made possible America's first public fountain, the centerpiece of which was "Water Nymph and Bittern," an allegory of the Schuylkill River carved by William Rush.

One of a series of at least 79 portraits of Washington painted by Rembrandt Peale, only one of them from life. In this "porthole" style painting Washington is surrounded with classical motifs. The oak wreath or "corona civica," awarded to Roman citizens for saving the life of a fellow citizen in battle, along with the Latin legend "Patriae Pater" or "Father of his Country" probably evoke classical republican ideals rather than the Emperor Augustus, who was given the title Augustus and awarded the civic crown in 27 BCE and in 2 BCE received the title "Pater Patriae." The mask of Jupiter, king of the Roman gods, in the keystone affirms not only Washington's supremacy, but also classical ideals of leadership. Philadelphians may have remembered the Walnut Street Theatre's display on December 23, 1799, ten days after Washington's death, which featured "an affecting scene of a tomb, in the center of which was a portrait of the sage and hero, encircled by oak leaves."
